About

My past experience intimately connects to my approach to psychoanalysis as a dynamic relationship built on trust, approached with curiosity and attention to the unique details of your life and relationships.

Before transitioning into psychoanalytic practice, I spent over 20 years working in the art and dance worlds as a professor, writer and curator. Working with artists, I listened closely to their process and ideas to help translate experience and imagination into a physical form—sculpture, drawing or dance—to share with another. I taught at Rhode Island School of Design and Yale School of Art. Creating spaces for exhibition and research in visual arts and dance, I opened jennjoygallery in San Francisco and collective address in Brooklyn.

Writing animates all my practices, it is a space to metabolize experience and ideas, find language for sensation—laughter, pain, unspoken histories, desire, ethics or being taken down by a breaking wave. I published The Choreographic (MIT Press, 2014) and have published in BOMB, Studies in Gender and Sexuality and Psychoanalytic Perspectives.
